This stunning heirloom variety produces medium sized cobs with red kernels. It is a native variety from Mexico once used by the Aztecs. Traditionally used to make flour, but if you harvest young it can also be eaten fresh off the cob.
Scientific name: Zea Mays
Seeds in Pack: Choose from 35, 100, 1000 or 10,000 seeds
Growing Information:
For the best germination rate, soak seeds overnight before sowing. Plant them directly into the soil where they are to grow, in a sunny position. Create a 15mm hole, sow 2-3 seeds per hole, cover with soil and keep moist until germination. When they germinate thin them out to the strongest seedling. So plants can easily pollinate one another, it is best to grow atleast 10 plants, spaced 20-30cm and in multiple rows, rather than one long row. Ensure your soil is fertile with a good moisture holding ability. Simply add some animal manure, compost or fertiliser to improve your soil.
For maize varieties, only harvest the cob once it is full matured on the plant.
For sweet corn, harvest earlier.
